Abatti Return Anticipated
Imperial Irrigation District officials say they anticipate District One Director Mike Abatti will resume his duties when he is released from a San Diego hospital.
“Every board director shall attend all regular and special meetings of the board, unless there is good cause for absence." - Imperial Irrigation District Board of Governance Manual "It's our understanding that Director Abatti's condition has improved markedly, and we expect him to return to his IID duties as soon as he's released from the hospital,” said IID spokesman Kevin Kelley.
Abatti has been absent from three Board of Director's meetings. IID officials will only confirm that Abatti has been ill, and is being treated in a San Diego area hospital.
According to the rules set forth in the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Governance Manual, Abatti would be able to miss as many meetings as needed to recover, as long as the other directors agreed that “there is good cause for an absence.”
The issue might have become more prominent, depending on how soon Abatti could resume his duties. His absence means that only four directors have been attending meetings, creating possibilities for tie votes.
According to the Imperial Irrigation District Board of Governance Manual, which was adopted on July 24, 2007, and revised on Dec. 18, 2007, there is no limit on how many meetings a Director can miss.
Policy number G-5 of the manual states “Every board director shall attend all regular and special meetings of the board, unless there is good cause for absence.”
There isn't a policy in the manual to deal with unplanned, long term absences such as illness or other situations that might force a director to miss a substantial amount of board meetings.
